Three women appeared before the Harare Magistrates' Court accused of conspiring to unlawfully adopt a newborn baby in exchange for US$180.
A 47-year-old woman, 47, her 16-year-old daughter (name withheld), and Dion Tore, 34, were charged with child trafficking. The minor is in Social Welfare custody, while Zisengwe and Tore await their bail hearing.
Prosecutor Mercy Masamvi alleges the plot began in January when Evelyn met Tore in a WhatsApp group, "Sora ne Miti." Evelyn revealed her daughter’s pregnancy and discussed giving the baby to Tore, who had suffered repeated miscarriages and wanted a child.
The two agreed that Tore would adopt the baby after its birth. Tore arranged a prenatal scan in February, confirming a seven-month pregnancy. She then allegedly connived with a nurse at Harare Hospital to induce labor prematurely and falsely claimed to be the baby’s mother.
On February 25, 2024, the teen delivered the baby prematurely. On March 5, she reportedly handed the newborn to Tore, who fabricated a death certificate stating the baby had died. Evelyn later received US$180 from Tore between May and August.
The scheme unraveled when police from Murehwa were alerted, leading to the arrests.
