In the heart of Zimbabwe, a dedicated cultural ambassador is working tirelessly to preserve and promote the country's rich musical heritage. Gogo Nectar Muhwati, affectionately known as Mwenewazvo, is a renowned mbira musician and group manager of the Matsimba Epasi Chigare Mbira Group, which she formed in 2019.
With a passion ignited by watching her elders play the mbira during ceremonies, Gogo Nectar began her musical journey at a young age. Influenced by Zimbabwean legends like Thomas Mapfumo, she soon began playing professionally, feeling a deep connection to her cultural heritage.
Through her group, Gogo Nectar aims to nurture young talent and ensure that Zimbabwe's rich musical traditions are not lost. She balances traditional mbira music with contemporary influences, attracting new audiences while maintaining the essence of their cultural roots.
Gogo Nectar is also dedicated to teaching the younger generation about the importance of preserving traditional Zimbabwean music. She shares stories behind the music, emphasizing its cultural significance and historical context, and provides hands-on training and performance opportunities.
Despite facing challenges, including initial skepticism from elders and limited resources, Gogo Nectar has persevered, collaborating with fellow musicians and adapting to changing times. Her most memorable experience came during the group's debut at the Harare International Festival of the Arts, where she witnessed young Zimbabweans connect with their heritage through their music.
Looking ahead, Gogo Nectar hopes to contribute to the growth and evolution of mbira music both in Zimbabwe and globally. Through innovative performances, workshops, and collaborations, she aims to popularize mbira while ensuring its cultural authenticity remains intact.
For Gogo Nectar, playing the mbira is not just about music; it's a profound connection to her cultural heritage. She instills this sense of connection in the young musicians she mentors, teaching them about their history, myths, and the spiritual significance of the music.
To aspiring mbira musicians and mentors, Gogo Nectar offers this advice: "Respect tradition, innovate with integrity, and share your passion selflessly. Empower young musicians to become cultural ambassadors, preserving their heritage while forging new paths."
Through her work, Gogo Nectar continues to inspire the next generation, ensuring that the beautiful sounds of mbira will resonate for years to come.
