China Medical Team Restores Hope by Reconstructing Limb After Months-Long Infection

The 21st China Medical Team in Zimbabwe has successfully performed a complex surgery on a patient suffering from a persistent postoperative infection, restoring both health and hope. The procedure marks a significant achievement in the team's ongoing efforts to provide specialised medical care in the region.

Forty-year-old Chaerera, a Zimbabwean national, faced months of suffering after a car accident left him with an open fracture of the left forearm. Following initial treatment, including open reduction and plate internal fixation at a local hospital, he developed a severe postoperative infection. Despite repeated dressing changes and medication, his condition deteriorated, resulting in a persistent sinus, purulent discharge, and immense disruption to his daily life and work.

With no improvement in sight, Chaerera sought help from various sources and was eventually referred to the China Medical Team stationed in Zimbabwe.

Orthopedic specialist Dr. Chen Junpeng led the medical team in addressing this complex case. Following a detailed examination and X-ray analysis, Dr. Chen diagnosed a fracture with internal fixation of the left ulna and radius, loosening of the ulnar plate, and potential osteomyelitis.

Recognizing the urgency of the situation, Dr. Chen convened a multidisciplinary team to develop a tailored treatment plan. On November 8, the team successfully performed a surgical procedure involving lesion clearance, thorough debridement, removal of the loose plate, and application of external fixation to stabilize the fracture.

Postoperative care, including antibiotic therapy and irrigation drainage, proved highly effective. The infection was brought under control, with redness, swelling, and discharge disappearing entirely. Chaerera expressed profound gratitude to the Chinese medical team, praising their professionalism and dedication.

“This experience has not only restored my physical health but has given me hope and a brighter outlook for the future,” said Chaerera.

The success of this case highlights the vital contributions of international medical teams in addressing complex health challenges. The 21st China Medical Team continues to strengthen Zimbabwe-China ties through its commitment to improving healthcare access and outcomes.
