South African Airways pilots have called off their strike, which commenced on December 5, 2024, following an agreement reached between the airline's management and the South African Airways Pilots Association.
The labor dispute originated from SAAPA's demand for a 30% salary increase, which was later adjusted to 15.7% inclusive of other benefits. SAA countered with an initial offer of an 8.46% increase backdated to April. After extended discussions, the airline raised its proposal to a 9.47% increase, which ultimately resolved the standoff.
During the strike's early stages, SAA managed to operate only 51% of its scheduled flights, including a mere 33% of its international routes. By December 7, over 100 pilots were preparing to return to work, allowing SAA to aim for a full restoration of its flight schedule by December 8.
The settlement marks a significant step forward for SAA, ensuring smoother operations and bolstered labor relations as the airline continues its recovery efforts.
