UN Security Council Extends Sanctions on Al-Shabaab Until February 2025

Zim Now Writer

The UN Security Council has unanimously extended sanctions on Somalia's al-Shabaab terror group until February 28, 2025.

The resolution, proposed by the UK, maintains measures such as an arms embargo, travel bans, and asset freezes targeting the group. It also authorizes maritime interdiction to enforce restrictions on illegal arms imports, coal exports, and components used to manufacture improvised explosive devices.

Somalia has faced persistent insecurity, primarily from al-Shabaab and Daesh/ISIS. Since 2007, al-Shabaab has waged an insurgency against the Somali government and the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), a UN-mandated peacekeeping operation.

The group has intensified attacks following Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s declaration of an "all-out war" on al-Shabaab after his re-election last year.

These sanctions aim to curb the group's ability to fund and execute operations, ensuring continued pressure on the terror network.
