UN Security Council Approves New Somalia Peacekeeping Mission

Zim Now Writer

The United Nations Security Council has authorized a new African Union mission in Somalia, African Union Stabilisation and Support Mission in Somalia, to replace the current anti-terrorism operation starting January 1, 2025.

Since 2006, Somalia’s security has heavily relied on foreign interventions, beginning with Ethiopia’s invasion, which ousted an Islamist-led administration but sparked a prolonged insurgency that has claimed tens of thousands of lives.

AUSSOM comes as the European Union and the United States, the primary funders of African Union forces in Somalia, push for a reduction in peacekeeping forces due to concerns over long-term financial sustainability. Negotiations over the transition to the new mission have been complex, with funding remaining a critical issue.

During the vote on Friday, the United States abstained, citing its reservations over funding, while the other 14 members of the Security Council voted in favor of the resolution.

This move underscores a shift in international involvement in Somalia's security landscape, as stakeholders aim to balance financial realities with the need for stability in the Horn of Africa.
