The African Union has expressed concern over rising violence in Mozambique after the country’s general elections held on 9 October 2024. The unrest, which erupted following the Constitutional Council’s announcement of the final election results, has led to significant loss of life and property.
In a statement, Moussa Faki Mahamat, Chairperson of the African Union Commission, conveyed his condolences to the bereaved families and urged all parties to prioritize peace and stability.
He called on Mozambican security forces to exercise restraint while maintaining law and order.
“The African Union is deeply concerned about the ongoing violence in Mozambique and the tragic loss of lives. We urge all stakeholders to seek a peaceful resolution to this crisis and avoid further destruction,” Mahamat said.
The AU also reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Mozambique in resolving the crisis.
It pledged to collaborate with the government, local stakeholders, and the Southern African Development Community to restore calm and safeguard constitutional democracy in the country.
The situation remains tense as efforts to mediate the conflict continue. Mozambican authorities and political actors are being encouraged to engage in constructive dialogue to end the violence.
