In a move aimed at strengthening ties across the continent, Ghana has announced visa-free travel for citizens of all African countries, effective early 2025. This decision, approved by President Nana Akufo-Addo in December, fulfills a pledge made at the Africa Prosperity Dialogues to build stronger ties across Africa .
Ghana's new visa-free policy is expected to boost tourism, trade, and travel to the West African country. Previously, visa restrictions were seen as a major hurdle to these sectors. The country had allowed visa-free access to nationals of 26 African countries and visas on arrival for citizens of 25 others. Only travelers from two nations on the continent required a visa before visiting .
With this move, Ghana joins Rwanda, the Seychelles, the Gambia, and Benin as the fifth African nation to offer visa-free travel for African passport holders. This policy aligns with the African Union's goals under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and complements Ghana's "Beyond the Return" campaign, which aims to reconnect Africans and the diaspora with their heritage .
