The Medicines Control Authority of Zimbabwe has issued an urgent warning about counterfeit Abhayrab rabies vaccines circulating in the market, posing significant risks to public health and animal safety.
In a statement, MCAZ highlighted the seriousness of the issue, warning that the counterfeit vaccines "may not provide adequate protection against rabies," a viral disease that is almost always fatal without timely treatment. The presence of these fake vaccines threatens efforts to control rabies in the country.
The authority urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious vaccine products or unverified distribution channels. Veterinary professionals have also been advised to verify the authenticity of vaccines before administration to ensure the safety of their patients.
To address the crisis, MCAZ is working closely with law enforcement agencies to trace and eliminate the sources of counterfeit vaccines. The public is encouraged to seek vaccinations only from registered clinics and licensed veterinarians to ensure they receive genuine and effective products.
This proactive response aims to safeguard public health and maintain confidence in the nation’s rabies control initiatives.
