The Southern African Development Community has strongly condemned the recent massacre linked to M23 rebels in the Democratic Republic of Congo, as violence continues to escalate in the country’s eastern regions. Reports indicate that dozens of civilians and peacekeepers have been killed in a series of brutal attacks.
In an official statement, SADC Chairperson and Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa expressed deep concern over the worsening humanitarian crisis, calling for urgent measures to protect civilians and restore peace. The regional body also stressed the need for accountability, urging international partners to support stabilisation efforts.
“The chairman condemns, unreservedly, the cowardly attacks on the UN and SADC peacekeepers that have resulted in some of them paying the ultimate sacrifice for the cause of peace in the Eastern DRC,” the statement read.
Mnangagwa warned that the ongoing violence perpetrated by M23 rebels not only endangers the security of the DRC but also poses a serious threat to regional stability. He reaffirmed SADC’s commitment to working with the Congolese government and other stakeholders to address the root causes of the conflict and promote lasting peace.
The situation in the eastern DRC remains volatile, with growing concerns over the humanitarian toll of the conflict.
