The Southern African Development Community has strongly denied allegations made by the Alliance Fleuve Congo/ March 23 Movement (M23), which claimed that the regional bloc's military mission is part of a joint multinational operation against M23 rebels in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

In a communiqué issued on April 12, M23 accused the SADC Mission in the DRC of collaborating with the Armed Forces of the DRC, the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda, and the Wazalendo militia during recent operations in Goma.

“SADC firmly refutes these allegations. SAMIDRC has not participated in any joint operations as claimed. These assertions are both inaccurate and misleading,” the bloc stated in an official press release on Monday.

SADC emphasized that its mission strictly aligns with decisions made by the SADC Summit of Heads of State and Government, adding that SAMIDRC is currently “implementing a structured and coordinated withdrawal from the DRC.”

The bloc also reaffirmed its commitment to a peaceful resolution of the ongoing conflict in eastern DRC, referencing consultations held on March 28 in Goma between SADC and M23 leadership.

“The organization remains dedicated to supporting peaceful and durable efforts aimed at achieving lasting stability in the eastern DRC,” the statement read.

SADC further urged all stakeholders to “act responsibly, refrain from inciting conflict, and work collectively toward de-escalation and the restoration of peace in the region.”
