Police in Marble Hall have made a significant bust, seizing R3 million worth of illicit Remington Gold cigarettes. The discovery was made after two suspects abandoned a truck loaded with the contraband, approximately 360km from the Beitbridge border post, a known hotspot for smuggling activity.
The South African Police Service confirmed the seizure, stating that officers, acting on a tip-off, intercepted a suspicious truck travelling towards Marble Hall. Upon noticing the approaching police, the driver and passenger immediately fled the scene on foot, leaving the truck behind.
A search of the abandoned vehicle revealed a staggering 89 boxes (containing 50 cartons each) and 716 packs of 20 Remington Gold cigarettes. The estimated street value of the confiscated goods is R3 million. Authorities suspect the cigarettes were smuggled into South Africa through the heavily guarded Beitbridge border post from Zimbabwe. The large quantity of cigarettes seized suggests a well-organized smuggling operation.
