Mighty Warriors Sharpening Claws for AFCON Qualifier Clash Against Angola

Harare, Zimbabwe – The air crackled with anticipation at Prince Edward School on Thursday morning as the Mighty Warriors, Zimbabwe's beloved women's national football team, showcased their prowess in a training session ahead of their crucial African Cup of Nations (AFCON) first-round qualifier against Angola.  The striking trio of Ethel Chinyerere, US-born Ruvimbo Mucherera, and veteran Rutendo "Madzimai" Makore looked particularly lethal, leaving spectators in no doubt of their intent.

Mucherera's powerful shots echoed across the field, a testament to her skills honed in the Israeli top league. Chinyerere, with her clinical precision, reminded everyone why she's considered one of the most formidable players in the Zimbabwean women's game.  And even at 32, Makore, a legend of Zimbabwean football, displayed the predatory instincts that have made her a household name.

The training session held added significance with the presence of several ZIFA board members, including Vice Presidents Kennedy Ndebele and Loveness Mukura, board member Kudzai Kadzombe, and Women’s Premier League leader Theresa Maguraushe.  Their presence underscored the new board's commitment to reviving women's football in the country and provided a much-needed boost of morale for the Mighty Warriors.

The team is set to face Angola in a two-legged affair, the first leg taking place at the Estadio Joaquim Dinis in Luanda this Thursday, followed by the return leg at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Pretoria a week later. The victor of this clash will progress to the final qualifying round, where they will meet Malawi for a coveted spot at the 2026 Women’s AFCON finals in Morocco.  Malawi has already advanced due to Congo's withdrawal.

The Mighty Warriors' quest to reach the AFCON finals for the first time since 2016 is fueled by a renewed sense of optimism.  Coach Sithethelelwe “Kwinji 15” Sibanda expressed confidence in her team's abilities, highlighting the unwavering support from the new ZIFA board. "The board has been very supportive from day one," Sibanda stated. "They have made sure the girls are well-prepared and I can assure you the morale is very high. The team spirit is good." She also praised Mucherera's seamless integration into the squad, noting her positive impact on the team's dynamics.

Mucherera, the 28-year-old forward playing in Israel, is expected to be a key player against an Angolan side that has struggled recently, remaining winless in their last six competitive matches and conceding a staggering 19 goals in the process.  Angola's AFCON history is also less than stellar, with their last qualification dating back to 2002. However, history favors Zimbabwe, who secured a 4-1 victory over Angola in a COSAFA Championship match in 2019.

"We have been working well with my technical team; everyone is working in unison," Sibanda emphasized. "With the preparations we have had, and the support from every stakeholder, I think there is no reason we cannot bring back good results."

Sibanda has announced the final 22-woman squad for the trip to Luanda, featuring a blend of experienced players like Daisy Kaitano, Mavis Chirandu, Nobukhosi Ncube, Danai Bhobho, and goalkeeper Lindiwe Magwede, alongside rising stars.  Midfielder Emmaculate Msipa, based in Israel, will join the team directly in Luanda.

A new era seems to be dawning for the Mighty Warriors.  For the first time, the players are receiving training allowances, traveling in a dedicated team bus, and experiencing a level of professionalism that has been lacking in the past.

ZIFA Vice President Mukura reiterated the board's commitment to supporting women's football. “Let us always be at our best in terms of performance,” Mukura urged the team.  “I know and understand that the coaches did great work. We have a very good team that will bring us good results. Remember, as you go out there, you are flying the Zimbabwean flag higher.”
