Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals, in collaboration with Hunan Provincial People’s Hospital of China, is set to provide free cataract surgeries under the China-Aid Bright Journey 2 initiative.

The programme, aimed at restoring vision and improving the quality of life for patients, will take place from February 24 to March 1, 2025, at Sekuru Kaguvi Eye Hospital in Harare.

Screening for eligible patients began on February 12, 2025, and Zimbabwean citizens in need of cataract surgery are encouraged to register as spaces are limited. Beneficiaries will receive free surgery performed by experienced professionals, along with comprehensive pre- and post-operative care.

This initiative offers hope to many visually impaired individuals who cannot afford the costly procedure. Cataracts remain a leading cause of blindness, affecting thousands of Zimbabweans, particularly the elderly.

Programmes like Bright Journey 2 play a critical role in addressing avoidable blindness and improving public health.

A team of local and international eye specialists will conduct the procedures, ensuring world-class medical attention. Over the years, partnerships between Zimbabwe and China have significantly contributed to advancements in the country’s health sector, and this latest initiative further strengthens the bilateral relationship.

Patients with pre-existing conditions such as diabetes and hypertension are advised to bring their medical records and ensure their conditions are well managed to facilitate a smooth surgical process and recovery.
