Security officials intercepted two men on Monday after a firearm was discovered in their vehicle near a groundbreaking ceremony officiated by President Emmerson Mnangagwa.  The incident occurred at a security checkpoint just a few hundred meters from where President Mnangagwa, along with Vice Presidents Constantino Guvheya Chiwenga and Kembo Mohadi, were leading government officials at the event.  Approximately 1,000 people were in attendance.

The men were stopped and their vehicle searched as part of routine security measures.  The discovery of the firearm prompted an immediate investigation.

Beitbridge Police District Commander, Chief Superintendent Mesuli Ncube, confirmed the incident. "We are investigating such a case," he stated. "Our Criminal Investigation Department is holding some men in connection with that offence, and that is all I can say for now."
