Leading mobile network provider Econet Wireless Zimbabwe has announced plans to deduct funds from EcoCash wallets of customers found to have accessed its data services using unauthorized Virtual Private Networks.
In a statement, Econet revealed that it had detected VPN activity compromising network security and allowing some customers to use mobile data without paying.
“To rectify this situation and ensure fairness for all, we will be implementing automated deductions from EcoCash wallets for customers who have been using the offending VPN applications. The deductions will be based on the amount of data used,” the statement read.
Econet assured customers who had not used unauthorized VPN services that they would not be affected by the deductions.
The move comes amid growing concerns over cybersecurity threats and revenue losses faced by telecom operators due to unauthorized access to data services.
Econet stated that using VPNs to bypass mobile data charges is illegal and undermines the sustainability of network providers.
The company urged customers to adhere to ethical data usage practices and warned that further security measures might be introduced to curb such activities.
