Death Toll Rises to 46 in Sudanese Military Plane Crash in Omdurman

The death toll from the Sudanese military plane crash in the city of Omdurman has risen to at least 46 people, officials confirmed on Wednesday.

The initial report, provided by the health ministry, placed the death toll at 19, but later updates confirmed a significantly higher number of fatalities.

The Khartoum Media Office reported that the crash, which occurred on Tuesday, also left 10 others injured. The plane, an Antonov aircraft, crashed shortly after taking off from the Wadi Sayidna air base, located north of Omdurman. The city of Omdurman is the sister city of Khartoum, Sudan's capital.

The military issued a statement confirming that both armed forces personnel and civilians were among the victims, though they did not provide specific figures or details on the cause of the crash.

In addition to the loss of life, the crash caused damage to several houses in the Karrari district of Omdurman, according to the media office. The health ministry reported that some bodies were transferred to Nau hospital in Omdurman for identification.

Sudan has been embroiled in a civil war since 2023, following escalating tensions between the military and the Rapid Support Forces , a powerful paramilitary group.

The conflict has led to widespread destruction, particularly in urban areas, and has been marred by reports of atrocities, including mass rapes and ethnically motivated killings, which have been described as war crimes by the United Nations and international human rights organisations.

In recent months, the fighting has intensified, with the military making significant advances against the RSF in Khartoum and other parts of the country. The RSF, which controls much of the Darfur region, claimed responsibility for shooting down a military aircraft on Monday in Nyala, the capital of South Darfur province.
