Zimbabwean sprinters Makanakaishe Charamba and Tapiwanashe Makarawu secured a historic 1-2 finish in the men’s 200m final at the SEC Indoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday.

Charamba, representing Auburn University, won the title in a championship record time of 20.13 seconds, improving his own Zimbabwean indoor record. He finished ahead of fellow Zimbabwean Tapiwanashe Makarawu of the University of Kentucky, who clocked 20.26 seconds to take second place.

The SEC Indoor Championships, one of the most competitive collegiate athletics events in the United States, saw Charamba dominate the preliminary rounds before setting the new championship record in the final.

Charamba, who was an Olympic finalist in Paris last summer, continues to lower his national indoor record, while Makarawu also improved his personal best with his 20.26-second performance.

The two sprinters are expected to be strong contenders in the upcoming NCAA Indoor Championships, where they will compete against the nation’s best collegiate athletes.
