A 43-year-old Bulawayo man has been sentenced to an effective six months in prison after he was convicted of impersonating a police officer and serving fake protection order summons to two people.
Nhamo Karuru appeared before the Tredgold Magistrates' Court charged with impersonating a police officer. He was convicted and sentenced to six months' imprisonment.
The court heard that in January 2026, Karuru went to Montrose Farm 3 in Filabusi dressed in a Zimbabwe Republic Police uniform. Prosecutors said he falsely identified himself as Sergeant Nyoni from ZRP Tredgold Court before serving the first complainant with summons relating to a protection order.

On February 2, 2026, he allegedly repeated the offence in Dlamini Township, Matsheumhlophe, Bulawayo, where he again introduced himself as Sergeant Nyoni and served another victim with protection order summons.
The victims became suspicious and reported the incidents to police, leading to Karuru's arrest.
Police told the court they recovered a police identity card, a police notebook bearing the name Sergeant Nyoni, and a ZRP reflective jacket from Karuru.
A subsequent search at his girlfriend's residence in Magwegwe West uncovered more police regalia, including drab caps, STU caps, a riot jacket, handcuffs, sergeant rank slip-ons, combat boots, riot trousers, grey shirts and name tags bearing the name Sergeant Nyoni.
