A trio of individuals was recently brought before the courts for allegedly stealing tobacco-related goods worth US$37,000 from Premier Leaf Zimbabwe, a local tobacco company. Silas Togo, 44, Chiendambuya, 56, and Tecla Chiradza, 48, appeared before Magistrate Isheunesu Matova.
They were granted US$100 bail each and remanded out of custody until March 27.
The State, represented by prosecutor Rufaro Chonzi, claims the trio conspired with Effort Masimba Makota, a stores clerk employed by Premier Leaf Zimbabwe, to steal the goods. Between January 6 and 31, 2025, Makota allegedly forged collection vouchers and provided them to the accused.
Using these vouchers, they accessed the company’s stock, loaded aquamol paper and STC boxes valued at US$37 550 into Togo’s truck.
The theft was discovered during a stocktake on February 1, 2025. CCTV footage showed the accused committing the crime, and a formal report was filed with the Zimbabwe Republic Police.
Investigations led to the arrest of Togo, who implicated Chiendambuya and Chiradza.
The latter two admitted to selling part of the stolen goods to a buyer in Mbare Musika. However, none of the stolen items were recovered, and Makota remains at large.
