ZPCS Officer Arrested for Aiding Armed Robbers’ Escape

A Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service officer has been arrested for allegedly facilitating the escape of dangerous armed robbers from custody.

The officer, identified as 39-year-old Donald Madzinga, appeared before the Harare Regional Magistrates’ Court facing serious charges related to the incident.

Madzinga is accused of accepting a US$700 bribe to orchestrate the escape plan. It is alleged that he used his mobile phone to coordinate the plan and even provided a revolver to the inmates to assist in their escape.

The escape took place at the Harare Magistrates’ Court, where one of the fleeing inmates hijacked a vehicle at gunpoint.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing Madzinga handing over the firearm to the escapees. Authorities further revealed that he was arrested while wearing the jacket of one of the robbers who managed to flee.

Due to the gravity of the offence, the court denied Madzinga bail, citing the seriousness of the crime, the potential for him to flee, and concerns about possible interference with witnesses, some of whom are also inmates.

Additionally, the court highlighted national security concerns and noted that Madzinga’s wife resides in the United Kingdom, making him a potential flight risk.

One of the escapees, along with the firearm used during the escape, remain at large, as law enforcement intensifies efforts to recapture them and recover the weapon.
