Sahara Press Service– Zimbabwean President, H.E. Mr. Emmerson Mnangagwa, in his role as Chairperson of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), reaffirmed the regional bloc’s unwavering support for the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic’s (SADR) quest for total freedom, emphasizing that Africa’s liberation remains incomplete as long as Western Sahara remains under Moroccan illegal occupation.

“Africa cannot claim full liberation until Western Sahara is free and independent,” Mnangagwa declared, in his speech on Sunday as Chairperson of the SADC commemorating the Southern African Regions Independence DAY, reinforcing SADC’s long-standing solidarity with the Sahrawi people.

His statement aligns with the African Union’s position, which considers Morocco’s presence in Western Sahara as a continuation of colonial rule and doesn’t recognize to the North African country any sort of sovereignty over the Sahrawi territory.

Beyond Western Sahara, Mnangagwa warned against external threats to the independence and stability of SADC nations. He condemned illegal sanctions, economic coercion, and other forms of foreign interference that undermine regional sovereignty.

The Zimbabwean leader also urged an end to hostilities in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where ongoing conflict threatens regional security. He called for urgent dialogue and diplomatic solutions to restore lasting peace.

Mnangagwa further emphasized that political freedom must be accompanied by economic control, urging African nations to assert ownership over their resources and production systems to avoid dependence on external actors.

By advocating for Western Sahara’s independence, peace in the DRC, and economic sovereignty, Mnangagwa reinforced SADC’s role in defending Africa’s autonomy against modern neocolonial threats.
