Fourteen suspects have been arrested following a police operation that intercepted a truck loaded with unregistered medicines in Murombedzi, Zvimba. The vehicle, a rigid truck with registration number AFG 3713, was traveling from Bulawayo to Chinhoyi when authorities received intelligence leading to its seizure.
Zimbabwe Republic Police spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, confirmed the arrests, stating that the crackdown was part of ongoing efforts to curb the rampant circulation of illegal medicines.
“We commend members of the public for supplying crucial information that led to these arrests. The police will not tolerate drug peddlers who put lives at risk by distributing unregistered medicines,” Nyathi said.
Among those apprehended was the truck driver, Justice Nyika ,42, along with his two assistants, Prosper Maphosa ,37, and Clarence Ncube ,27. Their capture led to further investigations, resulting in the arrest of 11 more suspects in Braeside, Harare.
The suspects were found in possession of a massive haul of illicit cough syrups, including 815 boxes of Broncleer, 77 boxes of Benyin Cough Syrup, 162 boxes of Adeo Salteryn Cough Syrup, and 44 and a half boxes of Astrapane Cough Syrup.
Commissioner Nyathi urged citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious drug-related activities to the authorities.
“The public should feel free to contact the National Complaints Desk or report at any nearest police station. Drug abuse is a serious threat to our communities, and we need collective action to fight this menace,” he added.
