Government has introduced an Inspectorate Department under the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works to monitor and enforce service delivery standards in local authorities.
Deputy Minister Benjamin Kabikira announced the initiative in Parliament while responding to concerns that ratepayers were being charged for undelivered services. He said the ministry had set minimum service delivery standards across various sectors to enhance efficiency in local governance.
“In addition, the government has created an Inspectorate Department responsible for monitoring service provision in local authorities. The performance of these authorities will now be assessed using the minimum service delivery standards performance assessment system, with inspections conducted by the Inspectorate Department,” said Kabikira.
A blueprint launched last year, A Call to Action: No Compromise on Service Delivery, directs local authorities to develop operational procedures that comply with the law and meet these standards. It also mandates the ministry to conduct regular inspections and audits to ensure compliance.
The new Inspectorate Department is expected to strengthen government oversight and accountability, improving service delivery for communities across the country.
