The Zimbabwe Republic Police has announced a nationwide security operation aimed at ensuring a safe and peaceful Easter and Independence holiday period.
Commissioner General of Police Stephen Mutamba emphasized the importance of citizen responsibility in maintaining law and order as thousands prepare to travel and gather across the country.
“As the nation approaches the Easter and Independence holidays, a time of joy, reflection, and family gatherings, I urge everyone to prioritize safety and responsibility,” said Mutamba in the statement released yesterday.
Police presence will be heightened at public events and on major roads, with officers instructed to take decisive action against unlicensed public transport operators. “No pirate taxis or buses with no permits will be allowed to pass through police checkpoints and roadblocks,” Mutamba warned, adding that vehicles found to be unroadworthy or operated by intoxicated drivers will be impounded.
Police reported 27 dead and 159 injured in road crashes during last year's Easter period.
To combat rising crime and drug-related offenses, the police will maintain ongoing patrols and stop-and-search operations, particularly in high-risk areas. “The Zimbabwe Republic Police’s current blitz on drug barons, suppliers, and users will certainly be maintained,” Mutamba said, urging the public to report suspicious activity.
Parents have also been called on to monitor their children’s movements, with concerns raised over youth involvement in drug and substance abuse during school holidays.
The crackdown extends to liquor outlets, with a stern warning to illegal operators. “All unlicensed liquor outlets and shebeens will be closed while the operators will be arrested for the law to take its course,” the commissioner stated. He also advised licensed outlets to operate within their set times.
Businesses and individuals were advised to limit the handling of large cash amounts and avoid sharing sensitive financial information with all employees to deter robberies.
Commissioner Mutamba concluded by wishing all a safe holiday, reaffirming the force’s commitment to protecting life and property:
“May I take this opportunity to wish all Zimbabweans and our esteemed visitors a blessed, crime- and accident-free 2025 Easter and Independence Holidays.”
