A 23-year-old man has been convicted for raping a 26-year-old woman with a disability in Nyanga during the night of October 19, 2024. The accused and the victim were living under the same roof, though they were not related. Taking advantage of the victim's condition, the offender entered her room and raped her while she was asleep.
The victim, who is deaf and non-verbal, was noticed crying the following morning by another resident. She used sign language to narrate what had happened, explaining that she had been raped during the night. The resident who received the report informed her husband, who then took steps to report the matter to the police. This led to the arrest of the offender.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPA), the man has been sentenced to 18 years in prison, with 3 years suspended for 5 years, for the rape of a woman with a disability.
