GMC leaders with traditional  leaders

The Global Methodist Church was officially launched in Zimbabwe on Easter Saturday, marking a significant milestone for the denomination in the country. Scores of congregants gathered in Murehwa to commemorate the sacred event and celebrate the launch of the new church.

The formation of the GMC follows a doctrinal rift within the United Methodist Church over the issue of homosexuality. Conservative members who opposed the liberal shifts in UMC policy have now aligned themselves with the GMC, which advocates for traditional leaders

Reverend Forbes Matonga has been appointed to lead the Zimbabwean branch of the church on an interim basis. According to Reverend Matonga, the church's guiding principle is unwavering adherence to biblical teachings. The GMC plans to host its inaugural General Conference in Zimbabwe in 2026, and the country will be formally recognized as a member by August this year

The launch of the GMC has been met with widespread approval from traditional leaders and the general populace. Chief Goronga commended the church's stance on safeguarding cultural values, while Chief Mangwende expressed gratitude for institutions that stand firm on biblical truth. Other traditional leaders, including Chief Negomo and Chief Nyajina, also welcomed the GMC's commitment to traditional values.

The GMC's stance on homosexuality is clear, and the church has distanced itself from the UMC's liberal position on the issue. Last month, 12 Zimbabwean pastors resigned from the UMC, citing their disagreement with the General Conference's stance on homosexuality. The GMC's emphasis on traditional Wesleyan theology reflects its commitment to biblical values.
