Unki Platinum Mine, operated by Anglo American Platinum (Amplats), saw a 15% decline in output in the first quarter of 2025, producing 53 600 ounces.
The dip was primarily due to lower ore grades and a planned five-day plant maintenance shutdown. A similar maintenance exercise occurred in Q2 of 2024.
Located in Shurugwi, Unki remains a key asset in Amplats’ portfolio despite ongoing operational hurdles. In the same period last year, the mine produced 62,800 ounces, marking a notable year-on-year drop.
The decline coincides with Anglo American’s strategy to streamline its operations. In September 2024, the company sold a 5.3% stake in Amplats for US$403 million to bolster liquidity ahead of a planned demerger.
