Government  has launched the Sustainable Development Goals Schools Competition and Youth Engagements Programme, a nationwide initiative aimed at inspiring young learners to become champions of sustainable development.

Spearheaded by the Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare in partnership with the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, the programme was officially unveiled this week in Harare. It seeks to mobilise students across the country to take an active role in advancing the United Nations’ Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Targeting both primary and secondary school learners, the competition will promote innovation, leadership, and civic responsibility through activities that address pressing global issues such as climate change, inequality, and social injustice.

“This initiative is about equipping our students with the knowledge and skills needed to build a better future,” said a representative from the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education. “By fostering awareness and action on the SDGs, we are preparing them to become responsible leaders, workers, and entrepreneurs.”

The programme’s key objectives include: Raising awareness of all 17 Sustainable Development Goals, encouraging students to develop creative, community-driven solutions, and promoting leadership, debate, and collaborative problem-solving among youth

Participants will have the opportunity to showcase projects, engage in policy-relevant discussions, and propose sustainable solutions tailored to their local contexts.

Government officials noted that the initiative aligns with global trends to embed sustainability into education systems while unlocking the potential of young people to drive meaningful change.

The SDGs Schools Competition marks a strategic move by Zimbabwe to ensure that the next generation is not only informed about global challenges but also empowered to contribute to national and international development efforts.
