Controversial businessman and perceived Zanu-PF sympathiser, Mudiwa Hood, has made a rare admission about Zimbabwe’s harsh political and economic climate in the run-up to a mentorship and networking event he is hosting.
In a promotional message titled “Dear Mentee”, Hood listed discussion points for the August 2nd entrepreneurship forum in Avondale, Harare. Among the key topics: “Conducting business and thriving in a toxic political environment with unique economic challenges.”
The phrasing marks an unusual shift from Hood, who has frequently been criticised for his alignment with the ruling party and has typically avoided direct commentary on the country’s governance or business barriers.
While the primary goal of the event is to support and connect aspiring entrepreneurs with business leaders and investors, Hood’s candid reference to the country’s operating environment has sparked conversation online.
Participants paying US$100 will have the opportunity to pitch business ideas to a panel of CEOs and multi-millionaires for a chance to win US$1 000 in seed capital. A general admission ticket for the networking session costs US$50, and registration closes on July 20.
Other discussion themes at the event include “Navigating Entrepreneurship in Developing Markets,” “Starting a Business Without Capital,” “The Value of Relationships and Networks,” and “Key Elements of a Successful Business.”
Despite the politically sensitive undertones, the forum is positioning itself as a practical platform for young entrepreneurs to learn, connect, and potentially launch their ventures in Zimbabwe’s volatile environment.
