Makore Murder Convicts Resentenced to Life Imprisonment

The two men convicted of the gruesome murder of seven-year-old Tapiwa Makore from Murewa in 2020 have been resentenced to life imprisonment following Zimbabwe’s abolition of the death penalty.

Tafadzwa Shamba and Tapiwa Makore Snr were initially sentenced to death on July 12, 2023, after being found guilty by High Court Judge Justice Munamato Mutevedzi in June 2023. On May 12, 2025, the Supreme Court replaced their sentences with life imprisonment, in line with the new legal position.

Shamba, a herdsman, had confessed to drugging, killing, and dismembering the child, while Makore Snr, the victim’s uncle, was convicted as an accomplice. He had detained the boy at his home for hours before the murder.

The victim, known as Tapiwa Makore Junior, disappeared on September 17, 2020. Despite an intense search by his family and local villagers, his mutilated body was later discovered at a villager’s homestead after dogs were seen dragging it. Additional remains, including severed limbs, were later found in various locations, including a disused pit latrine.

The two convicts had an automatic right to appeal to the Supreme Court. However, the abolition of the death penalty halted the process, with the Court unable to confirm a capital sentence under the new law.
