Govt Backs Accurate Measurement Standards on World Metrology Day

Zimbabwe has reaffirmed its dedication to accurate measurements and fair trade practices as the country joined the world in commemorating World Metrology Day on 20 May 2025.

Held under the theme “Measurements for all times, for all people,” this year’s celebrations mark 150 years since the signing of the Metre Convention in 1875 — a key milestone in the global standardization of measurements.

Speaking at the commemorations, Minister of Industry and Commerce Nqobizitha Ndlovu said Zimbabwe remains committed to ensuring that all measurements are reliable, accurate, and traceable, in support of both local and international trade.

“The Ministry is empowering the Trade Measures Department to ensure effective and efficient execution of their mandate,” Ndlovu said.

He also revealed that the Legal Metrology Bill is nearing completion. Once enacted, it will establish the Legal Metrology Agency, which will be responsible for enforcing metrology laws and maintaining measurement standards across the country.

In addition, the Ministry is spearheading several public awareness initiatives to highlight the role of metrology in Zimbabwe’s economic and social development.

“I urge all Zimbabweans to recognise the critical role that metrology plays in promoting economic growth,” added the Minister.

World Metrology Day is celebrated annually to raise global awareness on the importance of measurement in everyday life, trade, science, and industry.
