CHRA Urges Urgent Action On Wetlands

The Combined Harare Residents Association (CHRA) has called on Government and stakeholders to urgently step up efforts to protect Zimbabwe’s wetlands and biodiversity, warning that continued degradation will exacerbate poverty and deepen inequality.

CHRA said wetlands across the country are under increasing threat from human activities, including land degradation, pollution, and the adverse impacts of climate change. The association underscored the role of wetlands in urban development and the protection of livelihoods.

“Wetlands provide essential services like water filtration, flood control, and habitats for many species,” said CHRA Chairperson Mr David Pasipanodya.

“But they are being destroyed at an alarming rate. This doesn’t just affect animals and plants — it affects people’s lives too.”

CHRA stressed the need for Zimbabwe to fast-track the domestication and implementation of the Ramsar Convention, a global treaty focused on the conservation and sustainable use of wetlands.

“The Convention gives us a roadmap to protect and wisely use our wetlands,” said Mr Pasipanodya.

“We need our government to fully implement it so future generations can enjoy the benefits of our country’s rich biodiversity.”

Zimbabwe is set to host the Ramsar COP15 conference in Victoria Falls this July.

CHRA welcomed the hosting of the event as a key opportunity for the country to take the lead in international dialogue on wetland preservation.

“This is a big moment for us to bring together policymakers, leaders, and communities,” said Mr Pasipanodya. “We hope it will bring real action on the ground.”

CHRA also called for increased investment in wetland conservation and greater support for community led environmental protection programmes. The organisation reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for safe, secure, and sustainable environments for all Zimbabweans.
