TelOne Managing Director Chipo Mutasa has announced she will be stepping down at the end of the month after her contract with the parastatal comes to an end. Appointed in 2013, she has been at the helm of the company for close to a decade.
TelOne is a State Owned Enterprise and governance policies state that the maximum that one can head such an organisation is 10 years.
Mutasa is credited with transforming the company from the old voice traditions to a broadband focused one within the period she served at its helm.
TelOne is also the largest and only ADSL internet provider, commands a respectable fibre presence and has built some national data centres in partnership with Huawei.
Owing to this transformation, the company managed to post an operating profit of $8,2 million and a net profit of $5,8 million for its 2015 financial year.
In a farewell message to management and subordinates, Mutasa noted:
“As I look back at the last 10 years and the progress that we have made, the challenges that we have conquered, the lessons that we have learnt, the dreams that we have shared and above all the friendships that we have created; a big part of me feels sad to be saying goodbye.
“I take a bow with my head high because of how you all worked so hard to build the TelOne brand and all the achievements we scored. Being associated with this amazing brand will remain a highlight of my career which I will so proudly acclaim.
“Together we started the journey to transform TelOne and so it is my wish for those that will come after me and indeed the rest of the TelOne team to keep moving forward and do even better.”
There is no word yet as to Mutasa's next station, with some watchers saying that she is likely to end up at the head of an SOE again. Prior to her 10 year stint at TelOne Mutasa was CEO of Rainbow Tourism Group, another SOE.
