Women in sport are making significant strides in Zimbabwe, thanks to a transformative initiative — the Women Leadership Programme — aimed at empowering women to take up leadership roles in the sports sector.
One notable success story is Joyce Kapota, who was inspired by the programme to launch her own sports consultancy, Amor' Sport. Fuelled by the programme's support and mentorship, Kapota boldly entered the race for the ZIFA Vice Presidency earlier this year.
Although the position was ultimately secured by Loveness Wadzanai Mukura, Kapota’s participation marked a milestone in the representation of women in sports leadership.
The second intake graduation ceremony of the Women Leadership Programme was held on June 1, 2025 in Harare, where Deputy Minister of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, Emily Jesaya, delivered a powerful keynote address.
“This programme aims to develop adaptable and impactful leaders, enhance intercultural understanding, and address challenges and opportunities for women in sport leadership,” said Deputy Minister Jesaya.
Implemented by the Government of Zimbabwe in collaboration with the African Union Sports Council Region 5 and the Association for International Sport for All, the programme has been pivotal in equipping women with leadership competencies in the sports arena. It operates under the empowering theme: “Empower One, Empower a Multitude.”
According to programme coordinator Sarah Charakupa, the initiative has enabled participants to gain invaluable leadership skills and discover their inner strength.
Eltah Nengomasha, Director General of the Sports and Recreation Commission, commended the dedicated team of mentors who guided the graduands throughout their journey.
“Your unwavering commitment helped these women bring their projects to life and reach this milestone,” Nengomasha said, addressing the mentors at the ceremony.
One of the proud graduands, Rumbidzai Dege — a teacher by profession — described her journey in the programme as a dream come true.
“Distance was never a barrier. The mentors were always available and supportive. I thank the Government of Zimbabwe for giving us this empowering opportunity,” said Dege.
The Women Leadership Programme continues to be a beacon of hope and a catalyst for change, shaping a new generation of female leaders in Zimbabwean sport. With continued support and collaboration, the future looks bright for women in sport leadership across the nation.
