Sugar Producers Assure Nation On Product Quality

Hippo Valley Estates Limited and Triangle Limited, Zimbabwe’s two largest sugar producers, yesterday moved to calm public concerns over sugar availability, pricing, and quality, stating that the local market is well supplied and production is progressing smoothly.

Spokesperson Dr Dahlia Garwe said the two companies produced a combined 440,000 tonnes of sugar during the last season, and carried 84,600 tonnes into the current season, which began in April.

“There was more than adequate sugar to meet domestic requirements,” Garwe said. “We are crushing ahead of target and expect to end the season in a very comfortable surplus position.”

Zimbabwe’s annual sugar demand ranges between 320,000 and 360,000 tonnes. Garwe noted that any surplus is exported, but domestic supply remains the top priority.

She dismissed claims of poor quality, saying the companies are committed to producing fortified sugar that meets global standards.

“All our table sugar is fortified with Vitamin A, unlike other brands available on the market,” she said. “We adhere to international certifications including ISO 9001, ISO 22000, and FSSC 22000, and enforce strict quality control from field to packaging.”

Garwe attributed cost increases to high energy prices, logistics, and borrowing costs.

“The cost of production is elevated because of high energy, borrowing, logistics, and other operational challenges,” she said.

“Despite that, we are committed to delivering quality products at competitive prices.”

Garwe said the companies remain focused on meeting consumer needs, ensuring safety, and sustaining operations under tough economic conditions.
