Govt Allocates 300ha for Charles Prince Airport Upgrade

Government has earmarked 300 hectares of land for the expansion of Charles Prince Airport, a move aimed at transforming the facility into an international airport to serve the upcoming new city in Mount Hampden.

Currently spread over 171 hectares just outside Harare, Charles Prince Airport primarily handles light aircraft and flying schools.

Under the expansion plan, the airport will be upgraded to international standards, matching facilities at Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport.

RGM International Airport was expanded in 2023 by China Jiangsu International, increasing its annual passenger capacity from 2.5 million to 6 million and establishing it as a key regional aviation hub.

The same Chinese firm has been engaged to carry out the Charles Prince Airport upgrade following negotiations with local authorities last year.

Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Felix Mhona, alongside his Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development counterpart Dr Anxious Masuka, Airports Company of Zimbabwe board chair Advocate Tichaona John Muhonde, ACZ chief executive Mr Tawanda Gusha, and other officials, conducted an inspection of the airport yesterday as plans move forward.
