ACZ Commences Construction of Second Runway, New Cargo Hub at RGM International Airport

The Airports Company of Zimbabwe has begun work on a major expansion programme at Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport, which will see the development of a secondary runway, new cargo handling facilities, and several supporting structures.

In a public notice, ACZ said the project will take place within the airport’s designated Red Zone, an area classified as restricted aviation land.

The authority has urged all affected property owners and occupiers to report to its offices on the third floor of the International Terminal Building within 30 days of the notice being gazetted, where compensation discussions will be conducted.

ACZ indicated that the expansion is being undertaken in line with Section 26 of the Regional, Town and Country Planning Act [Chapter 29:12], the provisions of Local Subject Plan No. 31, and Section 86 of the Civil Aviation (Aerodromes) Regulations, 2018 (S.I. 211 of 2018).

The company said the new runway and cargo terminal will significantly strengthen Zimbabwe’s air transport capacity, positioning the airport as a strategic hub for international commerce.

ACZ expects the development to stimulate economic activity at local, regional and national levels by improving trade flows and aviation efficiency.
