In a pre-match press conference ahead of the Warriors' World Cup qualifier against Rwanda, Warriors coach Nees defended his team's record and urged for a new perspective on Zimbabwean football.
Nees stated that the current team is on par with any other national team in the country's history. He pointed out that his squad was the only Zimbabwean team to have recently qualified for an international tournament, citing their AFCON qualification. "No youth team, no club team, no women’s team has achieved that," he said.
The coach expressed his frustration with what he called "negativism," calling for everyone, including the media, to "apply some sense of realism." He stressed the importance of unity, urging the nation to "pull together in one direction towards a positive AFCON."
Nees also condemned the "scapegoating and bad-mouthing of individuals," reminding the public that Zimbabwe has not won AFCON multiple times or qualified for the World Cup. He emphasized the need to maintain a positive perspective on the team's achievements and potential.
"We have talent, we are good—but only if we stick together," he concluded.
