The government has said it will cancel contracts for non-performing road contractors, with Transport Minister Felix Mhona telling Parliament that under the new rules firms must mobilize within seven days and will only be paid after delivery.

This comes as concerns have risen over the country’s road works.

Some roadworks contractors have been linked to scandals involving shoddy work or undelivered projects.

Major players in roadworks who have gotten large government tenders include Bitumen World, Fossil Contractors, Exodus and Company, Masimba Holdings, and Tensor Systems.

Wicknell Chivayo’s IMC, previously formed for the unsuccessful exclusive Starlink distributorship deal, has since pivoted into roadworks, though it is unclear if state contracts have been awarded.

Minister Mhona said the “no work, no pay” policy will plug leakages associated with substandard work or non-delivery.
