A 40-year-old Zvishavane man was today jailed for fraud after attempting to claim US$6 250 in death benefits from an insurance company using falsified documents.
Promise Banda was sentenced to 18 months in prison by the Zvishavane Magistrates’ Court. Four months were suspended on condition of good behavior, leaving him with an effective 14 months behind bars.
The court heard that on July 29 this year, Banda misrepresented to Ecosure Insurance Company that his daughter, Chipo Enia Banda, had died. He allegedly forged a child health card to create a fictitious dependent and used it to acquire a burial order from the Zvishavane District Registrar’s Office.

Banda then submitted the burial order and a false online claim to Ecosure, seeking to fraudulently obtain US$6 250 in death benefits.
Investigations revealed that the supposed beneficiary did not exist and that Banda had intentionally acted to defraud the insurance company.
The court found him guilty of fraud, noting that such schemes were a direct attack on financial institutions and eroded public trust in the insurance system.
