The City of Harare has warned residents of fraudsters on the prowl who are claiming that they are registering people for the allocation of market stalls at Mupedzanhamo Market.
Chairman of the SMEs committee, Councillor Denford Ngadziore said in a statement that all venders must approach council offices for the registration exercise which costs US$10.
He said he had received complaints that there are people who are claiming to be registering vendors for US$30.
“Please be advised that as council, we are registering vendors, applying to be on the list for just US$10 and this is being done at our district offices in Mbare, ostensibly to expedite vendors’ allocation.
“The exercise is being done to enable us as council to know the number of vendors. But the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Corporation exercise for the same, is being done by government and is holistic in capturing more data from vendors.
“As council, we are not involved in the scheme to register vendors at the cost we are hearing,” said Ngadziore in the statement, adding that the Mupedzanhamo Market will be opened at a date to be announced.
Rehabilitation works at the popular market were stalled due to heavy rains and strong winds that forced the collapse of sections of the precast wall.
