Transport operators hike fares as volume of travellers rises

Zim Now Writer

Travellers who were going to their rural homes for Christmas were paying through the nose for the journeys as most transport operators hiked fares in the wake of the rise in the number of travellers.

Routes that normally cost about US$10 yesterday cost in excess of US$20, a situation that is expected to worsen today as travellers try to beat the last day before Christmas.

Travellers complained that there was no justification for the fare hikes, arguing that fuel prices had gone down recently. “It is mere greed.  There is no justification for the rise in fares, it’s sad. It’s Christmas period, and transport costs generally increase because there are a lot of travellers.”

Those travelling from Harare to Chiredzi as well as Harare to Bulawayo were the most affected, with their fares having been hiked from US$15 to between US$20 and US$25.

The huge volume of travellers was an incentive for the operators as the cashed in with the fare hikes.

The congestion at Mbare Bus Terminus was clear evidence of the volume of travellers seeking transport to rural areas.
