Police have since arrested the owner of the dogs, identified as 50-year-old Gift Jambaya. Investigations revealed that the animals were last vaccinated in 2024, and the owner had ignored the Department of Veterinary Services’ 2025 rabies vaccination outreach programme.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police is investigating the death of a 13-year-old girl, Caroline Chari, who was mauled to death by three vicious dogs,” read the statement. “It is sad to note that the vicious dogs were last vaccinated in 2024 and the owner ignored the Department of Veterinary Services’ 2025 rabies vaccination outreach programme.”
Law enforcement authorities expressed deep concern over the increasing trend of dangerous dogs being left to roam freely without leashes or supervision. “It is the responsibility of dog owners to protect the public and strictly comply with public safety measures,” the ZRP stressed.
In response to the incident, police have intensified joint operations with the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), local authorities, and the Ministry of Health and Child Care. The operations are aimed at impounding stray dogs and all dogs being kept in residential areas without proper control. “The safety of Zimbabweans is being prioritized,” the police emphasized.
