The Zimbabwe Environmental Law Organization has rolled out a training programme in Bubi District to educate smallholder farmers on seed laws and climate-smart farming practices, in partnership with the Agricultural and Rural Development Advisory Services.
The training focused on helping farmers understand how the country’s evolving seed regulations, including the Seeds Act and the pending update to the Plant Breeders’ Rights Act, affect the saving, sharing and sale of seeds.

ZELO said the exercise was crucial as the National Agriculture Policy Framework (2019–2030) promotes inclusive and resilient seed systems. “Seed laws such as Zimbabwe’s Seeds Act and the pending update to the Plant Breeders’ Rights Act are changing how seed can be saved, shared, and sold. The Zimbabwe Environmental Law Organisation (ZELO) was in Bubi District last week, partnering with the Agricultural and Rural Development Advisory Services (ARDAS) and smallholder farmers for a training on climate-smart cash crops and seed law ,” ZELO said.
Through practical demonstrations, the farmers were introduced to climate-smart cash crops and sustainable farming practices designed to boost yields while protecting farmers’ rights and strengthening local seed systems.
According to ZELO, the initiative supports national efforts to build resilience against climate change, while ensuring that smallholder farmers remain central to Zimbabwe’s agricultural growth.
