An artisanal miner from Lalapanzi, Francis Mazarire, was tortured to death in a case of mob retaliation — all over stolen US$2,800, part of which he allegedly spent on his girlfriend.
Police have since arrested eight suspects, while five others remain on the run. Midlands provincial police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko confirmed the arrests, describing the case as one of the most disturbing incidents of mob violence recorded this year.
ZRP said investigation established that Tafadzwa Mashove, 34, of Athlone in Gweru, accused Mazarire of stealing his cash and fleeing to Lalapanzi. When Mashove returned and discovered the theft, he allegedly teamed up with twelve men to hunt down the suspect.
After Mazarire reportedly admitted to the theft and spending spree — including US$800 blown on his girlfriend — the group allegedly assaulted him with switches, kicked him, and poured boiling water on his body.

Police have urged the remaining suspects to surrender and warned against mob justice:
“People must report cases of theft or misconduct to the police instead of taking the law into their own hands,” said Mahoko.
