Zimbabwe Records Strong Progress Against TB

Zimbabwe continues to register meaningful progress in combating tuberculosis, according to the Global TB Report 2025 , which shows improvements across incidence, treatment outcomes and TB/HIV co-infection rates.

In the latest findings, the World Health Organisation (WHO) said “TB incidence in Zimbabwe has fallen to 203 per 100,000, a 3.8% reduction from 2023.”

WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the progress reflects strengthened national efforts and improved access to TB services.

Treatment outcomes have also shown improvement. “Treatment success for all forms of TB has improved to 91%, up from 89% in 2023,” said Dr. Tedros,

He also added that the  gains were a result of sustained community engagement and enhanced treatment adherence.

For drug-resistant TB, Zimbabwe is recording steady but gradual gains. According to Dr. Tedros, treatment success for drug-resistant TB increased from 64% for the 2021 cohort to 68% for the 2022 cohort although he emphasised that the condition remains difficult and requires continued investment.

Co-infection rates are also declining. Dr. Tedros noted that TB/HIV co-infection rates have fallen to 49%, down from 51% a shift attributed to strengthened HIV testing and integrated care models.

However, he cautioned that progress could be jeopardised if global financing continues to shift.

“While these achievements are encouraging, the shifting global funding landscape requires us to work harder than ever to safeguard and build on these gains,”Dr. Tedros said.

The Ministry of Health and Child Care reaffirmed WHO ’s support, stating  that together, we are moving closer to ending TB in Zimbabwe
