In Nampula’s rural Murrupula district, a group of teenage girls has formed a bicycle-ambulance volunteer network transporting pregnant women to clinics. Using donated bicycles fitted with makeshift trailers, they’ve completed 37 emergency transports in November alone.
The initiative trended on Mozambican Facebook pages after a video showed the girls cycling at dawn to pick up a woman in labour.
Local nurses say maternal delays have dropped sharply. The teens say they started the initiative after witnessing women die while waiting for expensive motorbike taxis.
