Senior AFZ officer Air Commodore Maketo dies in Chegutu crash

A senior Air Force of Zimbabwe officer, Air Commodore Pio Maketo is one of the people who died in the Chegutu horror road on Saturday.

Air Commodore Maketo died on the spot when an Inter Africa bus collided with a Toyota Hilux in which he was travelling.

The accident occurred about 10 kilometres outside Chegutu along the Harare-Bulawayo highway.

According to a statement released by the Zimbabwe Republic Police, two people died on the spot while 13 others were injured when the Yutong bus was involved in a head-on collision with a Toyota Hilux vehicle.

The Inter Africa bus had 17 passengers on board and was travelling towards Harare while the Toyota Hilux was travelling in the opposite direction.

The bodies of the victims were taken to Chegutu District Hospital mortuary for post-mortem while the injured are admitted at the same hospital.

Air Commodore Maketo was one of the two air commodores President Emmerson Mnangagwa promoted from Group Captains to the rank of Air Commodore in December 2021.

Six Wing commanders were also promoted to Group Captains at the same time.

Funeral arrangements for Air Commodore Maketo will be announced in due course.
