A 26-year-old man from Chief Makoni area, Patrick Guri, has been sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment by the Rusape Magistrates’ Court for a violent assault committed in November 2020.
The court heard that on the afternoon of November 13, 2020, Guri and the complainant were drinking beer together when an argument broke out.

The dispute quickly escalated into violence, with Guri assaulting the victim using his fists before repeatedly striking him with a wooden yoke.
The matter was reported to the police, but Guri fled and remained at large for several years.
He was eventually arrested and brought before the Rusape Magistrates’ Court to answer to the charge.
In passing sentence, the magistrate cited the seriousness of the assault and Guri’s prolonged evasion of justice as aggravating factors.
Guri was sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment, with three months suspended on condition that he does not commit a similar violent offence within the next five years.
